The former Conservative Deputy Chairman Lord Ashcroft this week delivered to Parliament his review on Veterans’ Affairs.
His considered opinion is that more should be done for service leavers, regardless of their time spent in service. He reports that many of those with short careers of less than four years struggle to adapt to civvie street, often finding themselves homeless, imprisoned or suffering with mental health problems.
Surely this harks back to those years after the end of the First and Second World Wars when hundreds if not thousands of damaged men were effectively thrown on the scrap heap by society.
