Brian Wood’s story in Danny Boy will be essential viewing

A new trailer for factual drama Danny Boy has been released.

A first look at the BBC single drama follows the real-life events of human rights lawyer Phil Shiner’s [Toby Jones] pursuit of British soldiers falsely accused of war crimes.

Shiner and his firm Public Interest Lawyers made thousands of false claims involving the British military following the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The story homes in on soldier Brian Wood – played by Anthony Boyle – who embarks on a journey from war hero to alleged murderer following his time in Iraq.

After returning home from service Brian is falsely accused of war crimes by Shiner, who goes on to be struck off as a solicitor.

Congratulations to Brian on making this drama. Let’s hope his courageous story acts as a wake-up call to the government.

Next week, two unnamed soldiers will go on trial in Belfast for the 1972 murder of an IRA commander. It is the first time British veterans will be prosecuted for the alleged killing of an IRA terrorist.

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer has already resigned as a result of our failure to protect Northern Ireland veterans which is nothing short of a national disgrace.
