I had a fabulous evening at the National Army Museum last night. It is a great place if you have the time to visit. The paintings depicting various conflicts around the world over the years are amazing.
The painting of Afghanistan in 2010 depicts the contrast of the countryside and the beautiful terracotta colours against the explosions of war. The artist used lapis found in the hills of Afghanistan to bring the colours alive.
For me the old war diaries were the most telling. How was it that everyone could sketch what they saw so accurately – with technology we seem to have lost this skill. The charcoal drawings of men in uniform in the First World War and the details captured are amazing.
