Ben, the Hilary Meredith winning scarecrow from the 2013 Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival, has a chance of being a star of the small screen.
The Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean, organisers of the annual festival, have been invited by McCain Foods to send a selection of their favourite scarecrows to the first live scarecrow audition being held at the ARTS Theatre in London’s West End on September 30th. The successful scarecrow will appear in the McCain sponsorship bumpers either side of each Emmerdale episode.
Ben was waved off this morning and started his long journey to the capital to be put through his paces in a series of auditions in front of celebrity judge and ex-Emmerdale star Sheree Murphy. They will be judged on good looks, creative design and originality.
The current band of McCain scarecrows watch over a potato field bordering the Emmerdale village, regularly commenting on the show, the farmer and his potatoes. They will be joined by the winner of these auditions who will be filmed for the next series of the McCain sponsorship adverts to start in January 2015.
The ultimate winning scarecrow will be awarded with £5,000 for the organisers to spend on the local Scarecrow Festival next year so it’s hoped that if not Ben, then at least one of the Wilmslow entries will be successful.
