MoD’s longstop plans are “absurd and arrogant in the extreme”

On Friday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) issued a statement in response to an article in The Times regarding proposals for a civil litigation longstop.

Commenting on the MoD’s statement, Hilary Meredith, Chair of Hilary Meredith Solicitors said:

“It is clear that the MoD is extremely confused.

“They seem unable to appreciate the distinction between a set of fraudulent claims for Iraqi civilians brought by one lawyer and very worthy claims brought by their own men and women injured or killed in the course of combat or military training overseas. I am happy to offer my services to explain this important and critical distinction to them.

“To suggest that the MoD steps in and acts as a court when in many circumstances their negligence caused or contributed to injury or death in service is absurd and arrogant in the extreme. It is doomed to failure.”
