My thoughts on reforms to the House of Lords

Whilst payment for a seat in the Lords cannot be right, let’s not underestimate the hugely valuable role it plays in our political system.

I have sat in the Lords listening to various debates on proposed legislation. Anyone who has done so cannot fail to appreciate the crucial work they undertake.

The Lords acts as a “pause for thought” on any new legislation making suggested, sensible amendments and adjustments.

Without the House of Lords many government proposals would be passed without review by this wealth of knowledge. Many of the brains in the Lords are sharper than any in the country. Yes reform may be due but not too much please.
