New BBC drama, Danny Boy, tells heroic Brian Wood’s story

I’m very much looking forward to watching the upcoming BBC Two drama Danny Boy, which has recently begun filming.

The feature-length programme is described by the BBC as a “compelling new drama” and will tell the real-life story of Iraq veteran Brian Wood who found himself falsely accused of war crimes by the Iraq Historic Allegations Team.

Ultimately, the inquiry found that the claims against Brian were the “product of deliberate lies” and the lawyer responsible for bringing the claims, Phil Shiner was struck off for misconduct.

This is a story that has to be told to be believed. A tale of procedural blunders and systematic failures that led to false accusations and incredible wrongdoing.

In one of the most shameful episodes in modern legal history, thousands of British soldiers who served in Iraq from 2003 to 2009 were falsely accused of brutality and abuses against civilians. Over 4000 claims were made against our armed forces – many of which were fraudulent.

Our troops were abandoned by the MoD, and government, in their hour of need. It is a wrong that needs to be righted.
