LGBT Veterans to receive financial compensation

To acknowledge the historic injustice LGBT veterans suffered in the Armed Forces before the ban on being gay or bisexual was lifted in 20000, veterans will be able to apply for compensation from tomorrow, 13th December.

The ban was in place between 1967 and 2000.

Thousands of veterans who were dismissed from the Armed Forces will now be able to apply for compensation, up to £70,000 each, as a result under the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme.

Other restorative measures also apply, including requesting a letter of apology.

Applications may also be made on behalf of a veteran who has since died and who served and was affected by the ban.
